Cobourg Harbour – A Story of Small Town Ontario

Settlers to Sailors, Car Ferries to Condos

Cobourg’s harbour today is an active port filled with pleasure yachts, a recreational and wildlife haven, and most recently home to a growing condominium community.

It was not always like this.

Cobourg’s storied past revolved around its industrial harbour. Only old-timers  remember the days when the great ferries Ontario No. 1 and Ontario No. 2 made daily runs between Cobourg and Rochester, N.Y.  No one now living saw the railway cars carrying lumber and iron ore en route to distant markets.  Almost forgotten are the legendary steamship Cobourg and the racing yacht Countess of Dufferin.
