Feature article about Harriet Blackstock and the McGill University Department of Art as Applied to Medicine
Maclean’s Magazine, 1 August 1929
In her feature on Blackstock, author Norma Phillips Muir emphasizes how medical illustration was a profession distinctly open to women: “After watching Miss Blackstock at work—although I did not wait until the operation was completed—I sought her again in her office in the Medical Building at McGill University, and there found out the whys and wherefores of what seemed to me to be an entirely new profession for women.” In shadowing Blackstock, Phillips also gives us one of the most detailed peaks into the the everyday, step by step process of a medical illustrator.
