Remembering the Merchants of Main Street, Windsor is a partnership between Heritage NL and the Grand Falls-Windsor Heritage Society (GFWHS). This project involved conducting oral history interviews with residents of Grand Falls-Windsor, and using recent and archival images and documents from community members and the Grand Falls-Windsor Heritage Society to illustrate the stories behind Main Street’s merchants.

Although few of the earlier businesses remain on Main Street their impact can still be found in Grand Falls-Windsor in 2018. Cohen’s, Riff’s, and Brown Derby Wholesale Ltd are all in operation around the community and Wayne’s World on Main Street is owned by Harry Chow’s son Wayne. Roy’s TV is found in the former location of Paddock’s store, and the building which housed the Vogue Theatre still remains.

There are several well established businesses reusing buildings from the heyday of Main Street including Grant’s Footwear and Sports Excellence, Fabric Boutique, and B&W Meat Market. There are also some newer businesses which have recently opened on Main Street including Papa’s Sweet Shop, and Third Place Café. Many Grand
Falls-Windsor residents, however, will continue to remember the smell of the French fries, the sound of the train, and the sight of Cohen’s fashion shows.
