Wear the Suit, Don’t Let the Suit Wear You
Filmed and edited by Benjamin Shimwa
Close-up of Nils holding a peacoat on a black hanger in front of himself, sitting in front of a track sewing machine.
Nils: Yeah, that’s the peacoat [holds peacoat up]. You can definitely catch me in town wearing this. It’s funny how people recognize you from 100 million miles away based on what you wear and how you walk. And yeah, I feel like you could catch me from quite far and you’ll be like “We know that’s Nils.”
I think clothing definitely plays a part of my identity. It changes how I walk, it changes how I carry myself. I’m really big on body language and I think that when you’re wearing something that you clearly admire and enjoy wearing, it definitely shows in you. They always say like, “wear the suit, don’t let the suit wear you,” right? So, if you’re not wearing something that’s comfortable or that’s ill-fitted, it definitely shows in your- in your body posture and how you carry yourself, so that makes a huge impact.
So, I know that a lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into something like this, so I wear it proudly and you can tell based upon either my walk or my composure that I’m really enjoying the piece that I’m wearing, and it’s not just something that- it was laundry day and you just like threw it on or something. It’s like, no, there’s a lot of care and respect for. I’m a very lucky guy, like I recognize my privilege for sure, having someone make these fantastic pieces and yeah, I’m grateful.
