Fa’afafine and fa’afatama have existed for generations in Samoa and other parts of Polynesia. They don’t fit the colonial gender binary, and while they are culturally visible, resilient, and generally accepted, they still face legal and social discrimination, particularly when pushing against gender norms or advocating for rights beyond traditional roles. Pictured here is the Auckland Samoa Fa’afafine Association marching in the Auckland Pride parade in 2016.
