The Kamouraska Islands, including Île aux Patins, were places where people lived and worked. Local families exploited maritime resources for their subsistence and to support the local economy. The Kamouraska Islands also played an important role in navigation and communications. For example, Île Brûlée, near Île aux Patins, was equipped with a telegraph in 1809 and a lighthouse in 1862.
