A group of workers in a logging camp
Archives de la Côte-du-Sud, Raymond Grandmaison Collection.
A group of workers in a logging camp. The men in white, known as “cooks,” were in charge of the kitchen.
The cooks were responsible for preparing meals for the loggers, often under difficult conditions. The cookhouse, or camp kitchen, was one of the first buildings to be constructed. Meals were essential for maintaining the workers’ energy. The cooks prepared hearty dishes such as stews, fresh bread, and sweet tea. Meals were often simple but nutritious.
