Canoeing in Kamouraska, around 1910
Archives de la Côte-du-Sud, Abbé Laurent-Bruno Ward Collection.
Canoes were used mainly for fishing, but also for transporting goods and people between coastal villages. They allowed fishers to easily navigate the river and access their fishing grounds. Canoes were often handmade by local artisans using wood from the surrounding forests, mainly cedar and pine, which were known for being light and water resistant.
