Date: December 1903.
Low tide view of HMS Flora aground off Denman Island, British Columbia, in December 1903. After unloading stores and coal onto scows and lighters delivered by tugs from Victoria, which can be seen in the photograph, the ship was later moved off, with some difficulty, and repaired in the dry dock at Esquimalt. The intertidal rocks were later namedFlora Islet in recognition of the incident.
Built in Wales in 1893, HMS Flora arrived at the Pacific Station in early 1903. The ship visited Ladysmith Harbour in 1904, a year after its infamous grounding on rocks by Denman Island. During its visit to Ladysmith, the crew played a soccer match and gave a concert in the Opera House.
