The Town of Ladysmith is located on the western shore of Ladysmith Harbour – a six-kilometre-deep inlet into southeastern Vancouver Island’s coastline. Harbour industries include two active sawmills with associated log booms, a commercial boat harbour and several pleasure boat marinas. The town, separated from the harbour by the Trans Canada Highway, is largely laid out in a grid-iron pattern on the sloping ground facing the harbour. The skyline is formed by the mountainous spine of central Vancouver Island, the forested cover of which is marked by patches of clear-cutting.
