Chemainus, 14 kilometres south of Ladysmith, is famous for colourful murals that adorn walls throughout the town with images recalling local past events and vistas. This mural, number C5 of over 70 murals in the town, painted in 2017 by artists Kerry Onoshuko, Stephen Robinson, Stephen Sylvester, Anjilee Manhas and Gabi Jones of Chemainus Secondary School, is based on a photograph taken by local newspaper reporter Mollie Robinson of her niece, Nancy Robinson, and a few friends protesting in front of Dwyer’s confectionary during the Candy Bar War by licking ice creams instead of eating the suddenly more expensive chocolate.
