72nd Regiment Seaforth Highlanders Of Canada, March On First Avenue

Source: Ladysmith Archives
Date: 1914
The 72nd Seaforth Highlanders were one of several militia regiments sent to Vancouver Island after the August 1913 riots to keep law and order. They were posted to Ladysmith in March 1914, having been in Nanaimo since August 1913. They are shown here, in field dress, marching behind their band, led by three bagpipers. While in Nanaimo, the Seaforth Highlanders were very unpopular among miners, and a derogatory song, ‘Bowser’s Seventy Twa’, was composed about the regiment.
