The Beat Goes On: Ladysmith’s History and Music
Our Community, Our Music, Our Stories. This is the story of the community around Ladysmith, Vancouver Island, Canada, reflected through music.
We are on southeastern Vancouver Island, within the traditional territory of the Stz’uminus First Nation, a Hul’qumi’num-speaking Coast Salish people who have lived here for thousands of years harvesting the bounty of the sea.
Listen to the Stz’uminus First Nation sing age-old traditions from before the arrival of fur traders, settlers and immigrants. Re-live the foundation and rapid growth of the coal mining and copper smelting City of Ladysmith in the early 1900s with people coming here from many countries and cultures. Experience our labour troubles, First Nation struggles, and the booms and busts of our resource-based economy. Trace how our music reflects the lives of our people, our work, play, trials and tribulations. Hear how today “The Beat Goes On” in our diverse community.
We invite you to virtually visit by surfing through the story pages. Bring the family – there’s something for everyone!
