The Media Crisis and Its Impact on Journalism: What Does the Future Hold?

The fictional stories of Henriette and Julie make it possible to explore the experiences of Mauricie women active in the field of print media. A number of them were able to pursue successful careers in the decades before gender parity was achieved. The stories of Claire Roy, Michelle Roy, Doris Veillette Hamel and Lise Léveillé are among those that provided inspiration to subsequent generations of women journalists.

In the 1970s, the print media industry opened its doors to women, who began filling a wide range of roles. By the turn of the millennium, women had a strong presence across all aspects of the newspaper industry in the Mauricie.

Nevertheless, they continue to face challenges. The media crisis and the rise of toxic masculinity have been sources of concern in recent decades, and especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, newspapers have had to re-engage with their readership and find new income sources.

Not that newspapers are alone in facing a difficult situation. The television industry is facing its own challenges. Is there hope for the future? Should we be worried?
