A number of environmental groups emerged in the Mauricie during the 1990s. At least in part, this was a reaction to ongoing industrial pollution along the shores of the Saint-Maurice River. One such group, Conscience globale en action, was established in Saint-Louis-de-France. In August 1989, it organized a shoreline clear-up effort along the banks of the Champlain River.
