Red Mill Plant in Sainte-Marthe-du-Cap
On October 24, 1989, Le Nouvelliste published an article on the Red Mill iron oxide plant in Sainte-Marthe-du-Cap. Known as Canada Paint when it first opened in 1882, the facility was the last to process ore mined in Trois-Rivières. Originally, British engineer John Bradley had been sent over to supervise operations. Plant management became a family affair, with John’s son Joseph Bradley taking over in 1905, and his grandson James Bradley following suit in 1945. An interview with James was published in Le Nouvelliste on October 24, 1989. He explained that the firm had been forced to shut down in 1966, due to strong international competition. The site was then purchased by the local water treatment company, which demolished the plant in 1989.
At the height of its operations, the facility employed almost 50 people, ensuring many local families could support themselves.
