Mauricie branch of the Ligue catholique féminine (January 1, 1951)
Founded by the Catholic Church in 1927, the Ligue catholique féminine was intended to police women’s morality and ensure they promoted good family values at home. Active throughout Quebec, the organization had several thousand members. In addition to organizing lectures, meetings and other activities designed to influence women’s views and Quebec public opinion more generally, the group regularly published opinion pieces in Le Nouvelliste. These texts chastised women for letting their children watch movies, for dressing in certain ways and for engaging in other behaviour the group deemed immoral.
In 1951, members of the Ligue catholique féminine gathered to elect a new executive committee and to organize the year’s first general assembly.
