Lecture by Claire Roy (January 22, 1977)
Le Nouvelliste (January 22, 1977). Article by Michelle Guérin.
On January 22, 1977, Claire Roy reprised her lecture series that had been organized to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Le Nouvelliste in 1970. After covering the history of women’s pages in the newspaper since its founding, she explored the role played by Quebec’s first female journalists—women like Françoise Barry, Madelaine Huguenin, Gaétane Beaupré and Françoise Godet-Smet. She also noted that a modern version of the women’s page only appeared in 1939, with the arrival of Françoise Godin. And it was not until 1945 that the page adopted a feminist and political tone, under the pen of Pauline Bourgeois.
