Landslide in Nicolet (November 12, 1955) – Article by Claire Roy
Appartenance Mauricie Société d’histoire régionale, Le Nouvelliste Fonds (3042-074). Unknown photographer.
It was not until 1954 that a woman was finally hired as a reporter in the Mauricie. For Claire Roy, also known as Mamie, this marked the start of a 25-year career at the region’s daily newspaper. Among other reporting assignments, she covered the landslide that occurred in Nicolet on November 12, 1955. In fact, she would later describe “the tragic rock slide in Nicolet” as her “most striking” experience as a journalist: “I interviewed the families of victims and visited the disaster site. The photographer and I slid under the barbed wire when the military guard had his back turned, so we could interview the Mother Superior. I felt like a character in a detective story.” Roy’s professional achievements surely had an influence on her daughter, who began a three-decade career at Le Nouvelliste in 1956.
