Closure of the Gentilly-2 Nuclear Generating Station
Le Nouvelliste (April 11, 2011). Article by Paule Vermot-Desroches.
On April 11, 2011, journalist Paule Vermot-Desroches published a series of reports on perceptions of the Gentilly-2 Nuclear Generating Station among politicians and ordinary citizens in the Centre-du-Québec and Mauricie regions. The articles noted that many people were in favour of keeping the plant open, because of its positive economic impact. The closure of the facility on December 28, 2012, was therefore not well received. It was just the latest in a long series of shutdowns that had previously affected the Manac semi-trailer plant, the Belgo paper mill and the No. 10 paper machine at the Laurentide mill in Shawinigan. The latter facility, which belonged to Resolute Paper Products, would shut down entirely in 2014. Clearly, the ongoing process of industrial decline was far from over.
