General Assembly of the Cercle de fermières in Yamachiche (September 1943)
Appartenance Mauricie Société d’histoire régionale, Le Nouvelliste Fonds (2440). Unknown photographer.
A rural women’s organization established in 1915, the Cercle de fermières was dedicated to acknowledging the household and farm work performed by women in remote areas of Quebec. Meetings provided members with an opportunity to share knowledge. Adopting a maternalistic vision, the organization sought to equip rural women with a broad range of knowledge and skills. It is also interesting to note that the Cercle des fermières facilitated the intergenerational transfer of rural know-how, including traditional craft and food production methods.
