When plums begin to ripen, growers spread and attach canvas to the ground beneath the trees. Plums that have fallen off due to the wind are thus protected from soil moisture, as well as slugs and insects that would like to taste the fruit. Plums are more visible on the canvas than in the grass, making them easier to harvest.
It’s wonderful to see the plums bounce to the ground when a plum tree is shaken.
