Small and productive

‘Dominique’ columnar apple tree, fall 2023
Private collection
You don’t need huge fields to grow fruit trees. There are now several varieties of dwarf apple and pear trees that grow to no more than 2 m high by 2 m wide. They’re ideal for urban areas. Columnar trees, like apple trees, have a shape that’s even better suited to small spaces.
Some varieties are self-fertilizing, meaning that the trees produce fruit without it being necessary to plant other fruit trees nearby. At 4 or 5 years of age, these small trees produce enough fruit for a family of four. Owing to their small size, they can be pruned and picked without tall ladders.
That’s quite surprising!
