Missions aren’t just for secret agents! Companies and organizations have them too, and the Société d’horticulture du comté de L’Islet was no exception.
The society’s mission is to promote (especially in the eastern part of the province) horticulture, arboriculture and gardening; to encourage the planting of fruit and forest trees; and to gather information on the different varieties of fruit trees that are most resistant to our climate.
La Gazette des campagnes, April 22, 1880
As of the society’s founding in 1880, an exhibition was held every September. What was on display? Fruits, vegetables, flowers and beekeeping products, including honey cakes.
Displays designed with the finest products won prizes for their producers. Rewards were also given to those who had planted sugar maples and orchards or restored part of the forest.
