The garden and experimental orchard of Jean-Charles Chapais fils were located behind his childhood home in Saint-Denis. Since his own home was next door, he could keep a close eye on the garden and orchard and intervene if necessary. In addition to doing research here, Chapais would come to this spot to relax between his many trips to give conferences.
Although the garden and orchard suffered from Chapais’ absence after his death, they have since been restored.
The Chapais house was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1962, thanks to the efforts of a niece of Jean-Charles Chapais fils and the exceptional condition of the site. The provincial government classified the building as a heritage immovable in 1990.
