Never has a local athlete been such a focus of attention on the national and international scene as Denis Savard. He is the pride and joy of Verdun residents and an ambassador beyond compare for the municipality. His successes and contributions to the hockey world, as well as to the Verdun community, don’t stop there. In 1986, with his former teammates, Denis Cyr and Denis Tremblay, he set up a hockey school in Verdun. Over a 5-year period, some 300 youngsters benefited from the experience of these three men over the course of a three-week session during the summer. On June 30, 1998, to pay tribute to his contributions to the city of Verdun, the municipal authorities adopted a resolution to name the Verdun Auditorium annex “Aréna Denis-Savard”. The official ceremony took place on October 14, 2000, in the athlete’s presence.
