We Mourn Our Loss
The brief announcement which informed the world that King George VI had died peacefully in his sleep at Sandringham stunned and shocked the entire world. The sad news, at first hard to believe, came unexpectedly, and plunged the far-flung lands of the British Commonwealth into deep mourning. Throughout the fifteen years of his reign, the late King George VI exhibited qualities of mind and of heart that endeared him deeply to all and won him an immortal place in history. His accession to the throne came about as the result of most unusual circumstances, which required on his part a submission of his own private desire to the will of the people. The noble manner in which rose to every occasion during the dark war years; the simple heroism with which he shared the terrors of war with his people; the abiding faith in the ultimate triumph of justice and righteousness which emanated from all of hid official acts; and the exemplary life which he led as head of his own intimate family circle; proved him to be a King graced with those attributes pleasing in the sight of the Almighty and of man. Canadians will always remember with deep affection the visit of the late King and his Queen to our country shortly before the outbreak of World War II. The hearts of the people went out to them, sensing the natural dignity and charm of their presence.
The many sincere tributes to the late monarch from all the lands and peoples of the earth bear eloquent testimony to the respect and esteem in which he was held.
We humbly pay a reverent tribute to a gallant King whose simple modesty, high courage and wisdom set a noble example in a world of turmoil and confusion. We join our compatriots throughout the Commonwealth, and citizens of all nations, in offering our deepest sympathies to the bereaved family. We pray that the Almighty may bless Queen Elizabeth II and that her reign may bring abiding peace and happiness to all mankind.
The king, being deceased, long live the Queen !
