The Jack Koza Memorial Park, Site # 20

Examples of mining and milling equipment were collected from the surrounding mine properties and mounted for display at Site #20 on the Heritage Silver Trail. The Jack Koza Memorial Park was once the site of a foundry on the shore of Cobalt Lake and adjacent to the Railroad.

Air Line Meter

Air supplied to the different mines had to be monitored and the were mines charged for the quantity of air used. Each mine or take off point was fitted with an air line meter. It was monitored on a regular basis and the mines charged for the corresponding use of air. The compressed air from the system was deficient in oxygen due to the way it was compressed hydraulically. The oxygen content was about 18% instead of normal air which is about 21%. This fact together with the natural underground oxidation of materials, such a timber, sometimes lowered the oxygen levels to such an extent that a candle had difficulty burning. Candles were still used in some of the mines for illumination for several years after the advent of carbide lamps that gave much better light levels.

Portable Compressor

Portable compressors could be used instead of steam boilers due to their efficiency and portability. The model illustrated here would have been pulled from job to job by a tractor or horse and very quickly set up to power a diamond drill or sinking hoist whenever compressed air was needed. Air would be compressed to about 100psi. The compressor is gasoline powered.

Portable Compressor, back

Compressed air was stored in the tanks at the back to prevent surging of the machine when in use. The wheels are iron rimmed to take the arduous use to which the compressor would have been subjected.
