Mine Whistle

All the mines in Cobalt had their whistles mounted on the headframes or hoistrooms and each had a distinctive sound. They were sounded at various times of day and also if an accident had occurred. From the sound it was known which mine whistle had blown. As far as is known this is the last remaining whistle in Cobalt. It can be seen in the Cobalt Northern Ontario Mining Museum located across the street from the Willet Green Miller Memorial Site (Site #14 on the Heritage Silver Trail).

Preservation of the mining and milling equipment continues. Some of the original mining equipment from the surrounding mines was moved to other mining operations, while some ended up on the scrap pile when it became obsolete. We are fortunate to have recovered some fine examples of mining and milling equipment used in the Cobalt Mining Camp. Visitors find that these fascinating displays help bring to life the history of mining in the Cobalt area.

Since it is beyond the scope of this exhibit to present all that is available on the Heritage Silver Trail, we hope that visitors will be encouraged to come and explore this Heritage Site for themselves.
