School team rivalries could be just as intense as any NHL feud. Hockey players from Kirkland Lake who went on to play in the professional leagues may have developed their playing style because of the competitive nature they learned to play hockey in at the elementary school level. Hockey was physical and high energy, and it was all part of the fun of wanting to win.

3

Players competed for their school against other elementary schools in the area, including Queen Elizabeth Elementary, St. Jerome School, Holy Name School, Kirkland Lake West School , King George Elementary, Federal Public School, and Central Public School.

To be selected as a player for the school team was considered an honour. And like badges of honour, players were given crests with their school name on it to have sewn onto their clothing. The young players competed in the tournaments for trophies for their school and bragging rights.
