"With the advent of paved roads, the proliferation of the automobile and the appearance of huge trucking rigs on the highways, the revenues of the railways dropped sharply.
Mail service on the Kettle Valley Line ended on September 30, 1957. Passenger trains were replaced by dayliners (Budd Cars) in March 1958, and passenger service was finally abandoned on January 17, 1964. The last freight train from Penticton to Midway ran on May 19, 1973.
The railway was no longer economically viable. Track was lifted west of the Pope and Talbot Sawmill at Midway in 1979-1980. Now in 1984, Midway has only twice weekly freight trains, which pick up lumber and chips from the mill. Midway is once again the terminus of what was once the CPR's Columbia and Western Railway."
