Over the course of time railroaders have charted the history of this country and their legacy. Looking back on photographs of a bygone era you begin to see more when taken in the context of accompanying stories. While artifacts give us a sense of the times it is the words that provide the meaning. For railroaders to have presented their friend and fellow worker a gift of a silver tea service it speaks of the high esteem of their regard, given that a worker building the railway in 1885 earned one dollar per day.

In "Two sets of train orders . . ." retired railroaders reflect on how they needed to bend the rules to keep the potash cars from walking off the tracks. As the demands of the railroad changed workers often had to compensate until adjustments were made to the entire system. In this example the company followed by changing to longer rails in 1979. Can you imagine the effort required to keep to these slow orders?

Just like a family the next generation improves upon what came before. Warren explains the new GPS ballast dumping trains that have replaced section men and work crews walking along the train. Imagine the difference of being able to travel 20 mph versus the previous 2 to 4 mph of the previous method.
