Sports

In early days, athletic activities were usually impulsive. A spontaneous game would break out and whoever was around at the time participated. Eventually, structured teams, usually affiliated with a denomination, a trade or a school, began to form and team sports increased in popularity. Sports in Grand Falls took on more formality with the opening of the Athletic Field in 1910, which became the centre for recreation and organized activity.

Every year, the mill was shut down on the first Saturday in September to hold Sports Day, initially on the log cabin field, and later at the athletics field. The event included field events, swimming in the river, log rolling, and the main event was the tug-of-war contest between the different mill department teams. The company supplied all the prizes for the winners, and many of the prizes were imported from London.
