HOCKEY

The first official hockey game played in the old wooden rink was said to be played in 1912. It featured two teams made up mostly of British men who worked at the mill. Amongst them were the three McHenry brothers, Fred Hackett, Mike Hennessey, Ted Brain, Fred Wilcox, Sir Vincent Jones and Sebat Foran, but the most noticeable player of the lot was said to be Sir Vincent Jones, who played the game with a field hockey stick.

The First World War brought an end to hockey at the rink since the rink was being used by the A.N.D. Company as a storage shed. The game of hockey was back in full bloom in 1919, with three teams making up a league -the Terra Novas, the Crescents, and the Victorias.

The hockey league changed in the late 1920s and 30s to a four-team league, namely the Church Lads Brigade (CLB), the Guards, the Hawks, and the Catholic Cadet Corps (CCC).

In 1934 the two schools in Grand Falls, namely the Grand Falls Academy (GFA) and Notre Dame Academy (NDA), started a hockey championship. NDA won the first championship. Sir Vincent Jones, who was the general manager of the mill at the time, awarded the trophy for the championship. The hockey series for the Sir Vincent Jones Shield was to last 65 years before it was retired.

BASEBALL

American workmen, engaged in the construction of the mill, first introduced baseball to Grand Falls in 1908. Games were played on the town's first athletic grounds situated across the street from the Lady Northcliffe Hospital at the intersection of Lincoln Road and Carmelite Road. Soccer and baseball were played on this field until a new athletic field was constructed on Church Road in 1910, which then became the base of operation for all summer sports until the middle of the 1970s.

Baseball did not reach its popularity peak until the 1920s and 1930s when regular teams were set up, much the same as the club teams in soccer and hockey- the Guards, Church Lad Brigade (CLB), Catholic Cadet Corps (CCC) and the Scouts.
