Donald Graham, in his book, Keepers of the Light wrote; "The Canadian government appointed its own, rather lame commission of enquiry into the Valencia tragedy, headed by James Gaudin, on 5 February 1906. A month later the Vancouver Province revealed the commissioners' findings and recommendations, which were then "in the hands of the Minister." Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing where the report went after Louis Brodeur ( Minister of Marine and Fisheries) read it. No copy has survived."
The following is Donald Graham's overview of the recommendations:
"They called for a new light and fog alarm on Pachena Point near the site of the wreck, and another at Sheringham Point in the Strait between Carmanah and Race Rocks, in addition to improvements at Carmanah, a fog alarm and more powerful beacon for Cape Beale, and "first order lights and fog alarms on the more prominent headlands from Triangle Island (Scott Islands) to Lennard Island." At long last they insisted that ‘self-propelling, self-righting and self-bailing lifeboats' be stationed at Bamfield and further north at Ucluelet. The commissioners also recommended upgrading and extending the West Coast Trail from Port San Juan all the way through to Cape Beale, with huts equipped with provisions and wireless sets six miles apart. The trail was to be patrolled by full-time linemen ‘at least once a day in all sorts of weather.' "

The mission house on the hill there, up on top there, that was their living quarters used to have the store down below there. He was there for years there in that store there.

And your grandmother must have had to run it when he was on the trail.
Oh yeah, and the kids. My dad and aunts and uncle there. Not so much my uncle as he was the youngest, but my aunts were pretty good at it.

I wonder how many people lived in Clo-oose back then?
It was a lot, a lot of people. In the first world war there, in our school they had a plaque that showed all the people that went to war. After the war it showed all the ones that didnt come back from the war. They didnt make it. Jimmy Hamilton had it, he bought the school. Just for the lumber in it. The plaque was still on the wall. So he had it for years, and then he said, oh he says, I'm going to bring that up to you one day. He says, you know all them people. And I dont know all them people, cause it was before my time too. I know some of them. He says, you look after it. You can look after it. Ok Jim. So he brings it up and I've got it up in the building at my sawmill there, and I dont know what to do with it. So somebody should, well it's the past from Clo-oose. Its all the people that went overseas in the first world war and the ones that didnt come back. A lot of them didnt come back. I think there is something like twenty-seven of them there. That died in the war.
