Walter attended Aurora High School in 1892. At that time less than 10 percent of students went on to upper school - also, few parents could afford the $4.00 tuition fee per term.
He then went on to attend the Newmarket Model School where he studied teaching and also competed on the football team that won the District championship.

Poem from The Newmarket Era
1893
Kinghorn, Ontario

"11 jaunty boys were we, in black and white array,
Determined fellows to do, or die, in this the great affray.
Holly and George sashayed around
On right, now here, now there,
While Angus lithe and Billy bold
On left around did tear.
In centre, sturdy warhorse our Rolling did the act,
While back of him in bold array,
Staid Cain, Clark, Doyle, with tact.
Still further back we gazed on two
Our Sam and Neddy frisky, and last, not least,
Between the poles our Charles stopped what was risky.
"Tis needless quite, to eulogize the way the boys sustained
The honour of our country town and victory still retained."

"Not only did this sportsminded teacher, who was a noted football player, engage in school ground sports with older children, he would amuse the little tots during the noon hour with fancy tricks to make their long day at school interesting."
