In 1906 Walter married Eva Smith, the daughter of a successful black Toronto barber. Sadly, she passed away ten years later of heart failure.
In 1920, he married again; Laura Clark was a white teacher at the nearby Strange School.

After Walter's death, his second wife Laura went on to hold a position a prominence in the Township as well. She was a respected journalist, awarded a Centennial Medal in 1967 for her Service to the Nation.
