In 1731, LaVerendrye's nephew arrived and built Fort St. Pierre as a wintering post.

The Northwest company established the largest fort site in Fort Frances in the late 1770's. The Athabaska house was built to provide a trade site for the traders from the Athabaska country.

The Hudson Bay Company was in rivalry with the Northwest Company until the two joined in 1821. The Hudson Bay Fort lac la Pluie was retained and stayed in operation until 1903.

In 1830, George Simpson, governor of the Hudson Bay Company arrived with his young bride Frances. So impressed by her visit, the men at the post renamed lac la Pluie or Rainy Lake Post, Fort Frances in her honour.
