Fisher's Sawmill circa 1900, was the areas' first industry, aside from the fishery. Christopher Fisher arrived under contract as a woodcutter for the Halifax-based company Burns and Murray, who, together with John Tupper, purchased the Corner Brook sawmill originally started by Gay Silver.

In 1880, Fisher was appointed the new manager after Tupper was lost at sea in the Bay St. George area. He was able to stabilize and expand the Corner Brook mill and within a couple of years, bought the mill outright.

Fishers Mill in 1922.
Even though the sawmill was started before the arrival of the Fishers, Christopher Martin Fisher (1839-1927) had a great impact on the area of Corner Brook. Christopher Fisher worked at the mill and when the sawmill operator was lost at sea, he took over the business. He continued to operate and expand the mill until it was sold to the Newfoundland Power and Paper Company in 1925.
