Kate's break in radio came by accident. In 1934, she conducted a cooking class in Fredericton, when the female commentator at a local radio station broke her leg in an accident on the way to the studio.

The station manager ran downstairs and asked Kate Aitken to finish her class on the radio. The cake that Kate had been mixing was finished on live air. The sponsors of the cooking class were so impressed that Kate found herself launching a radio career.

The introduction to her radio show, "And Now Here's Mrs. A" became a household phrase from coast to coast. Each week she had sixteen radio broadcasts and one telecast, which she prepared by herself. Her program featured household hints, gossip and current events.
