Indian Reserve # 3 or "Siwash Flat" as it was called locally, was inhabited and farmed by the Pierre family of the Penticton Indian Band. Johnny and Antoine Pierre worked for rancher George Barclay. Following the sale of Barclay's ranch to the Summerland Development Company, many of the Pierres co-workers moved to Upper Trout Creek along the main cattle route.

A land deal was struck between James Ritchie and the Pierre family, Ritchie exchanging his property near Upper Trout Creek for Indian Reserve # 3. Ritchie and his Garnett Valley Land Company subdivided the former reserve and a new town centre developed on this flat.
