In the summer of 1993, Michel Tadros and Jacques St-Onge equipped the Gesmer with a decompression chamber and hired about fifteen experienced divers. Their goal was to find a cargo of nickel ingots that was believed to have been in the liner's holds.

As they went through the decks, the divers recovered more than 250 teak planks and many objects, including the stern anchor (stream anchor), a bell and a bain-marie pan. No nickel ingots were recovered. In the summer of 2002, the owners turned over a large portion of these objects to the Musée de la mer.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Langis Dubé, an independent deep-sea diver, made more than 350 dives to the wreck. His passion for this ship's history led him to build one of the country's largest collections of objects from the wreck. For many years, Langis Dubé was based in Sainte-Luce-sur-Mer in order to be close to the Empress of Ireland. He only had to travel a few metres to launch his inflatable and proceed to the site of the wreck.

Langis Dubé is one of the principal collaborators of the Musée de la Mer, to which he has given and loaned many objects.
