Portable forge

Sometimes horses were brought to the shop, other times the smith would come to the farm. In such cases, a portable forge was brought along as wellas a smaller anvil. The forge shown here has a blower that is operated by moving the wooden arm up and down. This goes through a belt system to drive a fan that blows though a port in the bottom of the firepan. As with the blower on the shop forge, this significantly raises the temperature of the burning coal. It can more easily seen in the picture to the right.
