Walter Schmoranz is the current President and Wine Master of Pelee Island Winery. He came from German in 1985 to take over from Mr. Strehn. Mr. Schmoranz has taken the winery to an International level as it has won hundreds of awards worldwide. In 2002, the Cabernet Franc Icewine won the Citadelle de France gold medal. In an article in the Kingsville Reporter in 1990, Mr. Schmoranz comments on the potential of Essex County to once again become a centre for grape growing and wine making. Since that time, as of 2012, there are now 17 wineries in the Lake Erie North appellation of Essex County. Pelee Island Winery has once again put Pelee Island as a grape growing and wine making center on the map and has fostered a new generation of viticulturists and wine makers. They all stand of the shoulders of the Pioneering families of Pelee Island.
