McMaster's next conference that they joined was the Ontario University Athletics (OUA), in which they are still a part of. McMaster's best seasons in the OUA prior to 2000, was in 1982, in which McMaster lost a playoff game to U of T, when they were defeated in the semi-final 28-6. In the season itself, McMaster finished the season with a 5-1-1 record. The next season, McMaster returned to the playoffs with a 4-3 record and played against the Laurier Golden Hawks. At the end, McMaster finally won a playoff game when they defeated the Golden Hawks 43-28, and with that win, McMaster went to the Yates Cup in which they played U of T. Unfortanely for McMaster they lost the championship game as they were defeated in a close game 20-16. This was the last time prior to 2000 that McMaster would play in a championship game. From 2000 on, McMaster became a force to be reckoned with.
