During Rich Newbrough's time as head coach Laurier only missed the playoffs a total of three times which were in 1982, 1984, and 1989. After the 1993 season, there was another head coaching change. This time replacing Rich Newbrough is now Rich Zmich, and he was the coach till 2000. During his time as head coach, he coached their only Hec Crighton winner in Laurier history in 1994. He coached quarterback Bill Kubas and in that season Kubas and Zmich helped the Golden Hawks to a 6-1 season, but did not bode well in the playoffs, as they lost to Western 10-9 in the Yates Cup final. During his time as head coach, the Golden Hawks compiled a 46-36-1 overall record.
