In the 1981 season, Alberta won another Hardy Cup, and went on to play Western once again. Much like last season, Alberta once again defeated Western 32-31 and once again went on to play for the Canadian College Bowl in which they played the Acadia Axemen. In the national championship game, the Axemen defeated Alberta 18-12. For the rest of the decade (1982-1989) the Golden Bears went 28-36 in which their best season in that time span was 7-1 record in 1984.

Much like the previous decade, the 1990s were not a successful one Alberta. One problem with the team was the financial situation that the university had to go through. The Athletic Director at that time Dale Schulha had a difficult decision at that time about the football program. His choices were to cut the football program, or cut other sports so that the football program can survive. Dale Schulha decided that the football program can survive the economic crunch and gamble that it can. He was right, and Alberta survived the economic crunch. Even though Alberta survived the cuts, the product on the field was still not good. With no Hardy Cup victories since the 1981 season, Alberta went 80-36-44 from the 1991 season through the 2000 season.
