Salmon Arm was an established fruit growing area known for its non-irrigated apples. Although fruit trees thrived on the bench lands above, Brooke and other farmers tried growing fruit on the valley or bottomland. This painting shows that Brooke kept busy pruning fruit trees.

Wanting to improve his stock in 1918, Brooke procured a Holstein Friesian bull. The cows produced award winning milk. The following image shows father and daughter cleaning the pieces of the cream separator and milking pails.

Brooke was keen about his herd. To protect the animals, Brooke fenced his property. As the farm straddled the Salmon River, the fence also crossed the river.

The herd and Brooke family had to be fed. Each spring, fields were dug and crops planted. Daughter Ruth is pictured on a disc-harrow, a heavy machine that breaks up the land, loosening weeds, and readying it for planting.
