All through the chilly season, Brooke and his sons took horses and cutters out to cut green poles for wood. The smaller trees had to be dried and cut or split for firewood. Note the burned stump behind Ruth and her father. Farmers used the slash and burn method to clear the land of cottonwood and other trees. Some stumps were too large to remove!
