The year 1913 will be a very painful one for Charles-Alfred on a personal level. On January 23, after a long illness, his wife, Émilie Dumont, passes away. A few months later, on May 10, Doctor Gelase Gagnon, Charles-Alfred's son-in-law, dies in nebulous circumstances. Doubts about his death, whether it was an accident or a murder, persist after the coroner's inquest. These events cause Charles-Alfred to reflect upon his life, his projects and his desire to continue working in his company. On February 21, 1914, he resigns in order to devote himself to his other projects and to his family.
